The Record · Cleared Eyes Only
“You arrived at the end of a story and mistook the doorway for the dawn.”
You asked to be told, and you were cleared, so you will be told. Read it once. We do not keep a second copy where a second pair of eyes could reach it.
And you asked, surely, why now. Why, after the Family kept this Record sealed through the whole long night of the human race, it is being placed in your hands tonight. The answer is simple, and it is the reason the lights in this room are the color they are. The oldest armor the Family has ever worn is not the silence of the deathless or the fire of the witches. It is the agreement of your entire species to look at the truth and call it a legend, to see the thing in the sky and file it under nonsense and look away. That agreement is breaking. After six thousand years, the mortal world is about to be told what we have always known, and it will not be told gently, and it will be afraid.
You have already watched it begin. A President of the United States, a careful man not given to wild talk, sat in front of a microphone and said, in as many words, that the objects are real, that his own government cannot explain them, and that yes, by every honest meaning of the word, the aliens are real.1 He stepped back from it by the next morning, the way they always do. But he said it, and the whole world heard him. And the man who holds the office now has gone a great deal further than merely saying it. He has signed the order. The files are being opened. The Pentagon’s own people stand in front of Congress, under oath, and admit the wreckage is real. The footage is declassified. The pilots who flew against the craft have testified to what they saw and could not catch. It is no longer a question of whether the curtain comes down. It is a question of what month.
So the Family is telling its own first. When the announcement comes and the world goes briefly out of its mind, the made are not to be found among the frightened. You will already know everything the President is about to learn, and a great deal he is not cleared for. You will know that the aliens are real, because this house has fought them and made peace with them and buried them since before there was an Egypt. You will know that the old tales of the deathless and the witches and the order behind the thrones are real, because you have been made into one of them. This is not a warning. It is the history behind the headline that is coming, set down by the only house on this earth that has stood between the human race and the things in the sky for six thousand years, and stands there still. Read it once. Then, when your neighbors are afraid, be the one who is not.
1 The dossier the mortal world has assembled, item by item, without once knowing what it was looking at, current as of this writing: the Presidents, the hearings under oath, the declassified footage, the sworn testimony of the men who handled the wreckage. Open the file →
Everything the world believes about the Family is late. The precinct that raided us, the church that read its rites over us, the patient historians who fixed our beginning at a year they could pronounce: each of them walked in at the end of a story and mistook the doorway for the dawn. The truth runs under their alphabets. It does not begin in Italy, or in England, or in a bar on a hot night in New York. It does not begin on this planet at all.
There were people here before us. Not before the Family; before the human race, before the grasses, before the first soft thing learned to swim. They were born of this Earth hundreds of millions of years ago, and they grew clever the way fire grows: beautifully, and then past all governing. They took the world apart to see how it ran, and when they had taken too much, they did the only honest thing a guilty god can do. They closed the sky, they froze the planet to the rock, and they let the slate go white and silent so that it might be written on again. Then they went out into the cold between the stars, and they waited.
When the ice let go and the seas turned over and life was meant to begin, they came back, and they helped it begin. They have come back in every age since: at the mouth of the Nile, on the plain at Giza, in the high passes and the deep mines, wherever a people grew ready to be moved a little further along. The world has a hundred names for them and has never once gotten them right. They are not visitors. They are the oldest natives there are, and they have only ever wanted the thing a parent wants, which is for the child to outlast the house.
They are the founders of what you have heard called, in whispers and in bad films, the Illuminati. They are not the only founders.
There is a man, born in a mill city in Massachusetts in the year 1974, who is older than the city, older than the country, older than the faith that built the church on its hill.
He has been a slave and a general, an advisor to kings and, when the advice was not taken, a king. He has carried the blade of the samurai and the silence of the shinobi; he has learned the slow hand of the mountain monasteries and the green fire of the old Irish dark. He died once, on purpose, to buy the years he needed, and he has not aged a day past forty-six in the thirty years since he last let himself drink his fill. The old ones call him by a name older than the one on his door, Σκιά, the Shadow. You will call him what the Family calls him. You will call him the head of the house.
His name is François.
What follows is the record, set down in the order a long memory keeps it: not the order it happened, because nothing that touches the gates happens in one direction, but the order in which a living thing remembers having lived. Some of the doors below are still shut to you. Do not force them. They open as you are cleared, and the Family has never once been wrong about who was ready.
Keep the lights blue. Say nothing to the locals. Read it once.
Every page that follows is sealed. The word opens all of it, and keeps it open for as long as you stay.
