Initiation
Nobody applies to the Family. We notice you, the way you hold a room, the way you survived the people who tried to make you small. The petition below is a formality. The decision was made the day you stopped apologizing.
The Requirement
It runs in women and gay men, the descendants of Bridget Bishop. It always has. This is not a policy we adopted and it is not one we can change. It is older than the family, older than the Village, older than the name they invented for us.
If you are neither, you may still serve with honor. You may drive. You may launder. You may hold an alibi like a sacrament. But you will not be made, and you will not be taught the old words. We did not write the rule. We inherited it, in blood, at Stonewall, and long before.
The Oath
“I will answer when the Family calls. I will keep what the Family keeps. I will go to the fishes before I give a name. From tonight I belong to the Family, in this life, and in the one that follows.”

Petition
We read everything. We answer nothing. If you are right for the Family, you will know before we tell you.

Your petition is with the Family.
Do not call us. Do not follow up. If you are one of ours, a man you have never met will already know how you take your coffee. The Family
